After teaching at OSU's School of Engineering for five years, he began work as a manufacturing engineering manager for Floating Point Systems. He later worked as a production manager for II Morrow Inc., a communications and navigation technology company that was owned and operated by UPS. He served as engineering director, operations manager, and ultimately it's general manager. Nichols was transferred to UPS' corporate office in Atlanta, where he held several positions supporting technology, strategy, quality, and operations. He now serves as vice president of UPS Air Group Operations, and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the world's ninth-largest airline, with over 600 aircraft serving more than 200 countries and territories.
